Book Review: Thriving with Adult ADHD by Phil Bossiere, MFT
Rating: 2 stars of 5
I have been on the hunt for a good book about adult ADHD or ADHD in women that is actually helpful for a while now, and after reading this book, let me just tell you…I am still looking.
Most of the books I have read thus far have been introductory at best and condescending at worst. They may offer a few tips for improving executive functioning but for someone who is just learning that they have ADHD as an adult, the tips tend not to be very helpful because they are usually just telling the reader to do very basic things we already naturally do on our own. If we have been living with ADHD as long as we have without realizing it and received our diagnoses as adults, chances are, we have already figured out how to do the very simplest of things that help us to function in modern society. I suppose I cannot speak for everyone, but personally, I am still looking for a book that dives beyond those basics and offers me more helpful suggestions for improving executive functioning.
The other issue I have with most of these books is that they cater to a very stereotypical, white male, hyperactive ADHD type and for someone who is an adult woman with a different type, the information presented is much less relevant.
I did come across these frustrations at times as I read this book. What I appreciated about Thriving with Adult ADHD is that it could serve as an introduction to ADHD and executive functioning for someone who is just beginning to learn about the topic and who is really not functioning well on their own. For me, though, it was just not quite what I was looking for.
