Book Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I’ve been venturing into a number of popular book series that I never read when I was younger to satisfy my curiosity and explore new-to-me subgenres. My latest series of choice is the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas and it’s the first of her series that I am reading.

Book one in the series is Throne of Glass. In it, we are introduced to a teenager who lost her parents quite tragically when she was young and was taken in by someone who trained her to be an assassin. The book begins with her in prison, receiving a summons to the castle where she will be given an opportunity to compete for the chance to earn her freedom.

I found the book to be a quick, easy read. It’s full of adventure and does a great job capturing the reader’s interest. The world-building is decent and the writing style is engaging. Several of the characters are quite likable and I was glad to see that the FMC is usually portrayed as a strong, resilient female character.

I believe this series is categorized as YA and thus doesn’t contain much in the way of language or other adult content. It does contain quite a bit of violence, however, so I would still advise reader discretion.

I liked this first book well enough to continue with the series.
